KAI NOSSEK

Actor,
London/Kent UK

Kai Nossek is a transmasculine/non-binary actor and performer based near London, known for their versatility across stage, screen, and digital media. With a foundation in both classical training and lived experience, Kai brings depth, authenticity, and heart to every role.

Their journey into performance began early—running through the lots of Pinewood Studios where their father, Royston Byrne, worked as a director and producer. This behind-the-scenes exposure sparked a fascination with storytelling. Growing up in a one-bedroom flat in Hampstead Garden Suburb, creative play was often Kai’s escape. After the family moved to Dover and briefly ran a rural pub, Kai focused on karate and dance, though performing publicly wasn’t always possible due to life circumstances.

At 17, the sudden loss of their father became a pivotal moment. Kai turned toward academics, earning a BSc in Applied Psychology from Cardiff University, while continuing to seek creative outlets. That same analytical insight now helps Kai explore the internal landscapes of the characters they portray.
After university, Kai started training professionally in 2016 at The Poor School before deciding to pause formal training to focus on their transition. They returned to the craft in 2017, studying at the Identity School of Acting, where they progressed while also working in the industry. The school offered a supportive environment where Kai could explore and express their identity as a transmasculine performer, and where casting choices reflected that journey. Additional training includes stage combat with Sword and Scoundrel and puppetry with Jess Parker of Parker Puppetry.

On screen, Kai’s roles include Aaron in Butterfly, Lost (independent film), Noah in All I Want... (online), and Friday (co-lead) in the web series Man Friday. Stage highlights include Far Away at the Donmar Warehouse, where they played a political prisoner in a striking ensemble piece.

Kai is also a passionate pantomime performer with a flair for transformation, quick wit, and physical comedy. From playing Dame Trott in Jack and the Beanstalk (Kent Tour 2021) to the Beast/Prince and villain Ferrero Roche in Beauty and the Beast (Midlands Tour 2019), and even Prince Charming in Cinderella (2014), Kai has delighted audiences with high-energy performances. A personal favourite remains their turn as Fleshcreep (Jack and the Beanstalk, 2016), where they choreographed their own solo and the children’s ensemble opening number—showcasing both creativity and leadership.

Beyond the stage, Kai works as a Costumier Specialist for Merlin Magic Making, sourcing and styling costumes for Madame Tussauds figures worldwide. This work taps into their passion for character creation, design, and theatrical transformation.

Kai is driven by a mission to bring complex, gender-diverse, and LGBTQ+ characters to life—not as side notes or stereotypes, but as fully realised people. This passion has led to roles in projects focused on underrepresented voices, including Pitch & Cologne George (Arcola R&D), Testosterone Tony (short film), and Man Friday, all of which feature gender non-conforming leads and primarily BAME casts.
In 2018, Kai also worked as a consultant for a youth theatre production of Dungeness, offering insights into trans identity and supporting young actors in developing informed, empathetic performances.
Their artistic life spills into their hobbies too—Kai designs and constructs costumes, styles wigs, and performs in cosplay skits at conventions, often while cursing their sewing machine.
When not performing, they can usually be found curled up with a book, manga, or controller in hand, or taking in another West End musical.

Since beginning hormone therapy in early 2018, Kai has continued to pursue both artistic growth and personal authenticity—with the support of their mother Roberta, an amateur performer herself. Whether onstage, on camera, or behind the scenes, Kai is committed to telling honest stories, championing inclusion, and being part of a more representative and compassionate industry.
